To find out more about what people think about electric driving, we conducted a survey throughout March and April 2017 on attitudes towards Electric Driving. We have a robust sample of 315 people spread across families, couples and singles across all age ranges and across city (London) and suburbs/ rural (South East focussed). This survey was done in conjunction with Hiya Car, a company that allows you to rent a car from someone near you.
What have we learned?
We set up EVr (pronounced "ever") to help get more people driving electric. By 2027 we want Electric Vehicles to account for 50% of new car sales.
An ambitious goal, but it seems like we're heading in the right direction! Amongst the people in our survey 88% are either driving electric already, considered it in the past or in the near future. So only 12% had no intention of ever owning an electric vehicle (at this moment we would like to add). The largest group (33%) are considering buying an electric car in 1+ years time so allowing some time for research, technology to develop and perhaps Tesla Model 3 to come out?
Over 81% are attracted to the low running costs and 79% care about the environmentally friendly nature of driving an electric vehicle. Plus of course, the Voltheads (39%) are keen to be early adopters of exciting new technology!
Do you live in London? People in cities are even more likely to want to buy an electric vehicle in a year or so time with 40% of people saying that versus a third in the overall sample. Perhaps not surprisingly, the low noise of the cars is a big attraction for people living in cities with 42% of people in London saying thats a really motivating reason for buying.
What electric cars are most popular?
Tesla, Tesla and Tesla it seems! Tesla have done such a great job getting people to love electric cars. A staggering 70% and more of people are interested in Tesla Model S (74%) and Tesla Model X (70%). Considering how short the Model X has been in the market, this is great for families. Of the more affordable range, BMW i3 is the most popular car in the survey at 45% interest, followed by Volkswagen e-Golf at 28%.
66% would rather hire an electric than normal car, if there was a good choice. With 72% of people being interested in trying before you buy, i.e. an extended test drive to see how they get on, we have used this survey to shape our Pick'n'Mix proposition . A little nice statistic to end with is that 45% of people have never even been in an electric car.
